A guide for local government on planning and design measures to reduce urban heat in the built environment
Civille developed WSROC’s Urban Heat Planning Toolkit (2021). The toolkit is part of a suite of projects being delivered by WSROC to improve Western Sydney’s resilience to urban heat. The toolkit focuses on strategies that can be implemented in new development and redevelopment. It provides specific advice to local government, recommending improvements to local planning provisions to better address urban heat. It also provides higher-level recommendations on improving state policies and national standards.
The toolkit uses a resilience framework to present a suite of planning and design responses to tackle urban heat at multiple levels. It shows how planning and design can play a role not only in reducing heat at the city scale, but also, importantly, managing its impacts at a human scale – in homes, other buildings and outdoor spaces. It successfully bridges the gap between technical research and principles for planning and design, providing high-quality, detailed and specific yet accessible advice for a non-expert audience.
Civille co-ordinated a team of experts to develop the toolkit, and worked with WSROC staff and a panel of local government representatives to ensure that it met their needs.
