Development providing ecosystem services to the downstream aquatic environment

Site 68 is located in Sydney Olympic Park, home of the Green Games. Prior to its conversion to a residential development site, Site 68 was a stormwater quality treatment pond, which played an important role in protecting the ecologically sensitive Bennelong Pond downstream. David Knights developed a strategy to replace the existing pond with an underground detention tank and a bioretention system sitting above the tank as part of the public open space for the development. The strategy was developed to provide a higher level of protection to the downstream Bennelong Pond.

Andrew McMillan, while working at Alluvium, developed the detailed designs for the system which includes a sediment tank, pump station, wetland for treatment of constant baseflows, and three bioretention cells. Working with landscape architect Turf Design, the designs incorporated a stepping stone path and a seating platform within the largest of the bioretention cells.
