Duck River’s Ecological Engine

Duck River is a major tributary of the Parramatta River catchment. The catchment was entirely developed in 1960s and 1970s with minimal stormwater treatment. We worked with Canterbury Bankstown City Council to develop a strategy to retrofit treatment into a large subcatchment to meet current best practice. The strategy included converting part of an existing urban pond which had significant water quality issues into a large bioretention system sized to treat the upstream catchment.

Alexa McAuley developed the designs for a large multi-cell bioretention system to treat the upstream catchment. To ensure good quality water in the park’s ponds, the system was also designed to enable water from the ponds to be recirculated through the biofilter.

The scheme also provides high quality non-potable water for reuse at Jim Ring Reserve immediately adjacent to the site.

The project was awarded a state and national stormwater industry award of excellence.
