CONNECTING THE CATCHMENT TO THE BAY

Blackwattle Bay is one of the most polluted bays in Sydney Harbour. The enclosed nature of the bay reduces tidal flushing. Pollutants are trapped and settle out on the floor of the bay. A series of raingardens were constructed as part of the Glebe Foreshore upgrades to begin to tackle the problem of untreated water quality discharging to the Bay.

A key challenge of the project was to integrate the raingardens into the overall foreshore upgrades in the steep constrained land between the foreshore and the adjacent residential development. Cascading raingardens were designed and divided into a series of tiers, separated by cast-in-situ concrete walls.
