A strategy for litter prevention in the Georges River catchment
Civille developed a litter prevention strategy for the Georges River catchment. The strategy outlines the why, who, where and how of litter prevention, establishing a framework for future action based on pairing NSW EPA’s litter prevention tools with local networks, knowledge and resources.
Georges Riverkeeper currently invests significant resources in cleaning up litter from the Georges River. One of their gaols for the strategy is to shift their focus towards litter prevention and reduce the need for cleaning up. Recently they have been running a schools education program focused on reducing stormwater pollution including litter, and our project looked at other opportunities that build on the organisation’s strengths.
Another goal of the strategy is to involve other catchment organisations in litter prevention. To develop the strategy, we engaged with six Georges River catchment councils, as well as local environmental and community groups.
