Sustainable water management for new community on the Cooks River

Discovery Point is a new community located on the Cooks River in close proximity to Sydney’s city centre and the airport. It is centred around Wolli Creek Station and the waterfront.

Andrew McMillan developed a sustainable urban water management strategy for the high density, mixed-used development. Andrew then subsequently developed concept and detailed designs for several of the subsequent DA stages for the implementation of the strategy. This included a series of larger raingardens located along the riverfront, smaller systems constructed on podiums and innovative raised raingarden planter boxes which receive roof water from adjacent buildings. In the raingarden planter boxes, the roofwater is surcharged into the raingardens which provides significant flexibility in the design and location of the systems. It also allowed for areas of deeper soil planting over the top of underground basements, facilitating the planting of medium and large sized trees.
