A Deconstructed Playground

Adaptive reuse was at the core of ‘the designs for a new playground and raingarden at Butler Reserve in Kingsgrove, Sydney. Traditionally the old play equipment would have ended up as landfill. Our design deconstructed the existing play equipment and playfully reused it throughout the site as part of a new nature play space and raingarden.

The raingarden filters and slows down the stormwater from an upstream residential catchment before it enters Wolli Creek and the Cooks River. The project was supported by funding from the Australian Government (read more). The effectiveness of the raingarden is being monitored through a partnership with Western Sydney University (WSU) (read more).
