Blacktown City Council undertook a $16M redevelopment of Blacktown Showground Precinct. A central part of this redevelopment was a new stormwater treatment system consisting of a large raingarden and wetland and 1,000 kL of underground storage tanks. The system stores water and supplies more than 20 ML/yr of recycled water for irrigation and toilet flushing. The scheme is also designed to act as a flood detention basin to protect downstream development from flood impacts.
The integrated water cycle management scheme intercepts stormwater from the highly urbanised Blacktown CBD catchment. Water is directed into the stormwater treatment system which is designed as a central element of the open space. The new cafe, picnic shelters, multi-purpose sports courts, playground and paths all pivot around the treatment system.
The treatment system has a timber boardwalk and a yoga deck to provide for additional engagement with the treatment system and passive recreation opportunities in the park.
